On Sunday, August 21, 2011 Donnie Thompson broke the powerlifting world record in Covington, KY. Donnie finished the day with a 1265lb squat, 950lb bench and a 785 deadlift. He is the first man in any organization to total 3,000lbs in a single 3 lift meet.
"My father played football for the Baltimore Colts and the Philadelphia Eagles in the sixties. I tried to follow in his footsteps but landed in the Arena Football League. Played in the NFL during the 1987 players strike. Opened my own commercial gym in Columbia, SC in 1994.
After much growth and prosperity, I sold it to pursue Powerlifting in 2000. I was the 16th person tototal over 2400lbs in 2002. In 2006, I was the third person to total over 2700lbs. I work for a Physical Therapy Center that is sports related and it goes hand in hand with my Powerlifting career. I also opened my own Powerlifting gym in Columbia in 2001. It is called The Compound. We have had four people squat over 1000 pounds, over a dozen elite lifters, and four benchers over 700lbs.
I grew up in Wheaton, IL during the 70’s while I attended military school. I went to high school in MD and college in WV. Graduated in 1988, played football until 1993. Opened and ran my own business from 1994-2000. Over six gyms have been built and are in business because of my gyms influence in the owners life. I am a big John Wayne and Elvis Presley fan. I even grew side burns for one of my meets! I am single and reside in SC. I have lived in SC for 18 years."
